Circle of Shit is a Finnish project that has been releasing albums since 2013, they have recently become prolific with 8 different recordings out this year. The conceptual extremity lies in the project’s commentary on religion (expressed through artwork over and song titles over the years) and bleakness of existence again expressed through titles and imagery over the years and particularly on this recording which was made in the 2010’s.

I have noticed that Circle of Shit seems very good at combining things like metal abuse, samples, raw instrumentation with electronic noise, they have an ability to experiment to just the right degree, it never seems to sink in what is being done. There is discordant guitar, samples and some noise on the opening track to form a strong collective sound. How all the different elements, particularly electronic noise and percussion (or samples of dialogue) are put together over the album work very well, the transitions from passage to passage are successful.

The use of sounds such as fucking noises, police sirens, scuffling, metal being hit, scraped and dropped are aggressive – the tracks radiate aggression in unique, original ways. The noise does the same work but drops off to allow the various sound sources to do this alone or together and always in their own way. Vocals are either used as noise or shouting and are often key in binding tracks together.

Romance through the body is a dark album, this is highlighted by the bleak use of noises that fire off each other or some nasty areas of Death Industrial that are sometimes allowed to resonate. I found myself impressed by the experimentation that goes on constantly. But over all the work works as work and I think there is a well-hidden attention to detail across all the album – this plays a large part in making it a success.
