This Control live set is from 2018 at Maschinenfest Festival, there have been two other Maschinenfest live Tapes on the same labels over the years, this is the third instalment. Live recordings are often the acid test to whether an artist can cut it live, there are many noise artists that are nowhere to be seen in the live setting.

Built up samples echo an intro to Black Mass, the drones soon start, that epic cinematic quality of the act soon makes itself known, the sound eclipses the muffled dialogue of the samples. This grows and erupts with the various noise sources colliding in bass heavy storms – the sound is destructive as it starts to break up. Buzzing distortion builds a more clearly Industrial sound and a Hellish vocal over the top of this forms Natural Selection. The vocal here really is horrible and evil; massive sounds build up again to applause. The inhuman vocal continues Blood will Rain, the noise is dramatic, huge drones that repeat, allowing the vocal storm to lead over the top of everything.

Things screech and pull back as The Survival of It All throws murkiness and looped samples at the audience. Big rumblings build in the background – what is he going to do now? Distortion sprays, feedback squeals and the vocal hell continues yelling at the audience, they must have felt they were paying for their sins or being rewarded for them, who knows – the sound is huge once everything is in place. The large-scale sound remains as things pull back a few gears to allow The Chosen Call to build up. The vocal is allowed more breathing space to rip out and fill the space as the electronics are very controlled and restrained here, the tension here is massive.

Chants, sirens and bass heavy rumbling electronics for screeching high pitched noises to battle on as the vocal attacks the noise so chaos erupts over the audience. World of Lies Part 2 is the explosive finale to Control’s set as Garrison vents over the audience, his impact reinforced by the noises that kick off. The sudden halt of the track is greeted by applause.

The sound on this set is epic, the way the noise is controlled and how the vocal works with the noise was clearly thought out in advance. You can feel how things are being used within the sound. It must have been epic to see – the tape is sold out, but the files are available from the Bandcamp. Excellent work.
